Sidewalk Chalk Poetry
It’s hot. 80 degrees hot. The Lake beaches are busy. The cars line main street with empty boat hitches. The Lake buzzes with the sound of motor boats.
Summer. Well…almost…….Three more weeks for anyone who is not a senior.
When I showed up for my two hour writer visit at the high school, we decided to take the high school creative writing classes outside. A nature walk and sidewalk chalk poetry. It’s amazing how a box of sidewalk chalk can bring smiles to faces. We transformed the sidewalk with words and colorful pictures.
Metaphors and similie.
Alliteration and Onomatopoeia.
I wrote a poem myself. “Ode to the Batting Cage.” It’s nothing that will be published beyond the sidewalk. But publication and high achievement wasn’t the point.
I smile when I think of that colorful, joyful sidewalk and the teens saying, “Hey…this is fun!”
