on January 10, 2011

It’s that time of year. The ALA Media Awards were announced this morning in San Diego. These awards include: The Newbery,Caldecott, Corretta Scott King, and Printz.

I was really happy to see that I had read three of the award books in the young adult book group. (This is a monthly group consisting of a high school librarian, middle school librarian, and three children’s writers who meet to read and discuss middle grade and young adult novels).

The three we had read this year were: One Crazy Summer, Ninth Ward, and Ship Breaker.

When I participated in the Mock Printz Award with the Sno-Isle Library, we chose Ship Breaker too.

It’s always nice to see which books I’ve read, and which I immediately pop onto hold at the library!

The YALSA Award for Excellence in a Nonfiction for Young Adults was awarded to Ann Angel for her book, Janis Joplin: Rise up Singing. There is a great guest post with Ann Angel on Cynsations.

I met Ann at the National Book Summer Writing Camp in 2002.She is a graduate of the Vermont College MFA in Writing For Children and Young Adults program and I am so happy to see her receive this award!

Also to note is Terry Pratchett received the Margaret A. Edwards Award. The Margaret A. Edwards Award “honors an author as well as a specific body of his or her work for significant and lasting contributions to Young Adult Literature. I’m in the middle of reading the Tiffany Aching Series (Wee Free Men,Hat Full of Sky, Wintersmith, I Shall Wear Midnight) and I love them!  The books are original, fun, and enchanting to read. Tiffany is a great character for girls of any age, but in particular, girls ages 10-13.
