Free Minds Youth in Juvie Programs

on March 16, 2011

The Free Minds Group is located in the Washington DC area and brings writing workshops and literature workshops to youth who are incarcerated.

Some of the youth’s poems from the workshop can be seen on their blog.

And a list of the books used in the workshop can be viewed here.

In the upcoming poetry workshop for Denney Juvenile Justice Center, “Denney Diaries: Poetry about Addictions,” I will be sharing some of these Free Mind poems with the Denney youth. We are also incorporating literature in the workshop, and I used many of the titles from the Free Minds Book Reading list.

Free Minds also has a program which supports the youth as they reenter their communities.  Activities include regular outings and workshops ranging from financial readiness and career goals to outdoor-team building.

All of these programs need support, and Global Giving is matching any donation to Free Minds by 30%. The donations will be specifically targeted to the Re-entry Support Program. But, that match from Global Giving is just for today!
