Chicago Girl Talk

on June 1, 2011

Today’s post on the Denney Poetry Blog is Love Was A Party  written by a teen girl in the poetry workshop at the detention center. (When we publish the youth’s poems, we are not allowed to publish names). This poem was originally published in our poetry book, Please Brave Me, Dry These Tears.

Instead of sharing more about the youth at Denney and the poetry workshop, I’d like to highlight another group working with young ladies in detention–Chicago Girl Talk.

Girl Talk is a biweekly program that works with girls who are incarcerated at the Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center. You  can find out more about Chicago Girl Talk here

Girl Talk is offering their most recent curriculum: Film, Art, and Resistance with Young Women in Detention.  The curriculum includes movies such as: Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Real Women Have Curves, and Akeelah and the Bee.

They also have a comic zine which looks at girls in detention and is a good for anyone working with youth in detention, or those who would just like to be more informed about young ladies in detention.
