Writing Opportunity for High School Teachers

on June 26, 2011

My writing journey began when I  was teaching middle school.  In the spring of my sixth year teaching, I was looking for writing opportunities for my students and stumbled across the National Book Foundation Summer Writing Camp. (This is no longer in existance). At the time, the camp was primarily for youth, and gave them the opportunity to participate in poetry and creative writing workshops with writers such as Norma Fox Mazer and Jacqueline Woodson. Each year, the camp, also accepted a couple adults who taught writing and were writers themselves. In 2002, I was one of the adults accepted. At camp, one of my workshop leaders was Norma Fox Mazer, and another of my camp advisors was Ann Angel. Both encouraged me to apply for the Vermont College MFA in Writing For Children and Young Adults Program–something I did and began the following summer.

Although, the National Book Foundation Summer Camp is no longer in existence, there is another opportunity for those who teach high school and also write. The 2011 Norman Mailer Writing Award for High School Teachers.

If you are a high school teacher and also write, you might want to enter the 2011 Norman Mailer Writing Award for High School Teachers. You may teach any subject and be either full or part-time.

From five finalists, one winner will be selected to receive a $10,000 cash prize along with travel* and lodging to attend the Norman Mailer Center’s Annual Gala on November 8, 2011, in New York City, where the Mailer Prize and the Norman Mailer High School and College Writing Awards are also presented. The winner will also receive a fellowship to the prestigious Norman Mailer Writers Colony during the summer of 2012.
