Global Girlfriends Book Review

on August 26, 2011

One of the highlights of my summer was attending the Sante Fe International Folk Artist Market.

The Market is a two-day event and takes place on Museum Hill in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Market entrance fees also includes entrance to the Museum of International Folk Art.  The Market includes more than 120 folk artists from over 45 countries.  Sales at the Market directly benefit artists and their families and help sustain communities worldwide– participants take home 90% of all sales. Many of the Market artists are from developing countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, Central Asia, Eurasia, and the Middle East. Some Market participants also include women’s cooperatives and humanitarian organizations whose work supports improving economic conditions and the quality of life for many- sometimes hundreds- of folk artists in their home communities. Artists use earnings for food, clothing, healthcare, education, and as an investment in their growing business enterprises.

My sister and I volunteered as Artist Assistants., and I wrote about our adventures here.

One of the books which I saw on sale during the Market was Global Girlfriends: How One Mom Made it Her Business to Help Women in Poverty Worldwide by Stacey Edgar.

The book is the story of how Stacey Edgar took her $2,000 tax return and turned it into a socially conscious business, Global Girlfriends, which helps women sell their free-trade goods such as purses, jewelry, clothing, and cards. In five years, Stacey’s business has moved from her first customers of girlfriends, neighbors, and moms at her kids’s schools to home parties, to an e-commerce website to a mail-order catalog and a wholesale business. The book tells of Stacey’s journey in starting this business, and talks about some of the struggles she overcame, including making sure that clothing sizes would fit American women, and that the goods were of a consistent quality women wanted to purchase.

The book is an inspiring story of how one woman is making a difference, and when I went to the Global Girlfriends Website, I felt as if I was back at the Sante Fe International Folk Artist Market.

I’d encourage you to check out the website of  Global Girlfriends! There are lots of good things for gifts!
